blind creek
Engaged by Melbourne Water (MW) as part of the MW’s ‘Reimagining Your Creek’ program REALMstudios collaborated with Alluvium to reimagine an 800m piped section of Blind Creek in the City of Knox. Blind Creek, as a piped low flow system, was a pleasant meandering floodway but lacking community function, both socially and ecologically. It presented as an opportunity to reconnect the community with the creek itself through daylighting, bringing water to the surface that in turn creates in-stream habitat for local flora and fauna and at the same time provides a higher quality amenity asset for the community to experience.
A series of localised interventions improve the public realm and accessibility to and across the creek through a selection of crossing bridge and stepping stone crossing points that are both functional and playful, incorporating seating and educative areas. These structures ‘float’ above the creekline to create moments for community engagement with the creek, places to pause and experience the values of the creek. An urban forest will hug the creek’s edge, choreographing places of sun and shade for the community activation and at the same time mitigating against the broader urban heat island effect.
